Huge blaze tearing through popular Lanarkshire Hotel

A huge inferno is being battled at the popular Popinjay Hotel in Carluke this morning.

Firefighters are currently at the scene tackling the blaze that appears to have taken hold inside the building.

Pictures show smoke and flames billowing from the roof of the hotel with roads leading to the premises closed off by emergency services.

The Popinjay themselves posted a message on social media not long after the fire broke out saying all staff and guests had been evacuated.

It is understood no staff or guests have been injured.

They said: "Fire incident at Popinjay Hotel this morning, we are able to let everyone know full evacuation of all staff and guests completed quickly without injury to anyone.

"The property is in the hands of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service for investigation.

"The road remains closed at present and we will update as soon as possible."

Locals also took to social media to warn people of the fire with one woman posting: "Omg!!! Popinjay hotel on fire down the Clydeside. Go with caution. Fire brigade already there and looked like everyone is out safely."

Clydesdale West Councillor Lynsey Hamilton said: "Sadly the Popinjay is on fire this morning. I can imagine how busy it will be on that road with the fire response so please avoid the area.

"I hope everyone is okay and it's not as bad as it looks."

And Councillor Ross Gowland for Clydesdale South added: "The Popinjay Hotel is on fire this morning please stay away from the area."

A Scottish Fire Service spokeswoman told Lanarkshire Live : "“We were alerted at 7.18am on Thursday, August 18 to reports of a building on fire at Lanark Road, Rosebank, Lanarkshire.

“Operations Control mobilised 10 fire appliances, one height vehicle and specialist resources to a fire affecting a commercial property.

“There are no reported casualties at this time and crews are still in attendance.”

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
