A huge fire broke out at a former caravan storage site once owned by the mother of killer Luke Mitchell last night.
Fire crews raced to the scene near the Shell Garage on Mayfield Industrial Estate, Dalkeith at roughly 7.15pm after concerned residents raised the alarm, Edinburgh Live reports.
Formerly Scott's Caravans, the now derelict site was previously owned by Corinne Mitchell, mother of convicted Midlothian murderer Luke Mitchell.
Mitchell was found guilty for the murder of 14-year-old Jodi Jones after her body was found in woodland in Dalkieth in 2003.
The now 31-year-old was sentenced to 20 years in prison, despite insisting his innocence throughout the trial.
Last night, footage of the inferno captured by locals showed a shed building completely engulfed by flames, with large clouds of smoke billowing into the sky.
Five fire appliances attended the scene and the road was cordoned off, with firefighters working for several hours to extinguish the blaze.
An investigation has since been launched by Police Scotland to determine the cause of the fire.
In 2021, Corinne Mitchell told a Channel 5 documentary - ‘Murder in a Small Town’ - that she was forced out of her family home and stayed at the old caravan site for six years.
She said that in the aftermath of her son's conviction, 40 caravans within the park were destroyed. She described the scenes as "utter carnage" after the police asked her to go out to the site at 3am.
On the incident, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were called to a report of a fire at a disused building on Mayfield Road, Dalkeith around 7.20pm on Friday, 17 March, 2023. The road was closed but was later reopened. Enquiries are ongoing."
In an update, they added: "Following enquiries into a fire at a disused building on Mayfield Road, Dalkeith, on the evening of Friday, 17 March, 2023, we can confirm that there were no suspicious circumstances.”
