Huddersfield win transfer race for midfielder linked with Bristol City and Sunderland

Jack Rudoni will be a Championship player next season but not with Bristol City as he closes in on a move to Huddersfield.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been the subject of interest in his signature throughout the summer following AFC Wimbledon's relegation to League Two. The Robins were just one of the clubs touted including Sunderland, Luton and Blackpool.

However, Huddersfield have won the race for his signature with the South London Press reporting the Terriers have had an initial £800,000 bid accepted with add-ons to take the deal beyond seven figures. Rudoni looks set to sign a four-year contract and will undergo a medical with the transfer expected to be announced imminently.

Rudoni was considered a player of interest to manager Nigel Pearson but no formal offer was made to Wimbledon. He fit the brief of being an impressive EFL talent who offers plenty of financial gain down the line if he continues to fulfil his potential.

The attacking midfielder flourished last season despite the club's disappointing season, scoring 12 goals and assisting four. Sunderland and Huddersfield both previously had offers turned down in the region of £500,000 at the end of June.

Huddersfield's plans for the new season were thrown into disarray last week when manager Carlos Corberan announced his shock departure from the club with Danny Schofield taking charge. Rudoni will become their fourth signing of the window following their play-off final defeat in May.

Manager Pearson has been reluctant to spend money this summer considering the financial position of the club until they make sales elsewhere. All four of City's incomings have arrived on free transfers with a small compensation fee paid to Forest Green following Kane Wilson's signing.

He also has other positions of priority ahead of signing an attacking midfielder. A defensive midfielder remains on the transfer wishlist alongside a central defender.

New signing Mark Sykes also added numbers this summer from an attacking midfield perspective with the former Oxford United winger expected to play a big part of the season in a No10 role.

City's transfer business has gone quiet over the last couple of weeks but were linked with Manchester City's winger Marlos Moreno over the weekend, although with Pearson's reluctance to play with wide men in his system it seems unlikely.

The Robins are also reported to be interested in taking highly-rated Aston Villa defensive midfielder Tim Iroegbunam but they are expected to face stiff competition from a host of Championship clubs.
