A Nottinghamshire mum who was training as a nurse has shared how she used her savings to launch her successful beauty business. Megan Ward, who has lived in Hucknall for almost six years, launched her beauty enterprise, MK Studio Nottingham, in March 2019 at her home alongside her nurse training.
It has since grown into a successful business, with its own place to call home. Megan, 29, a Nottinghamshire native, was able to use her savings to start her business and has been renting a property in Annesley Road since August 2021. But the mum-of-two admitted she'd never intended to end up with her own salon.
She said: "I never really had any desire to open a shop, and I was doing my nursing and I'd just had my first little boy. I kind of went into the skin journey as a fluke really. I managed to build that into a successful business alongside being a mum and doing my nursing."

Megan studied beauty in school in 2010 but then "floated away" from the industry. She went into caring roles before starting to train as a nurse with the NHS. She then got into skin treatments and "clicked with it" - rediscovering her passion for beauty in 2019.
At first, she worked from home with her business, but as treatments became more clinical, she realised she needed a salon space her clients could visit. Megan now has a team of specialists working on a self-employed basis at the salon, who focus on a range of treatments including brows, nails, facials, aesthetics and semi-permanent makeup.
The level four qualified skin technician prides herself on creating a relaxed environment for both her customers and the other specialists working at the salon. Megan works with skin and aesthetics only and says that currently skin treatments are proving popular now summer is just a few weeks away.
Megan, who has two sons aged five and 10 months, has been able to balance her business alongside being a mum thanks to her supportive partner and family. She still has a year left of training for her nursing qualification, but took a break after her second child.
Megan noted how some people had told her to slow down after having her second child, but the businesswoman said the arrival of another baby motivated her to work even harder. She added: "For me, it made me strive for more. When I got pregnant again, it made me work even harder, because now I've got every reason to.
"Some people think they can't do things because they have kids, but they, they've just got to want to do it. But I've got a really good family, and a really good team in the studio."
MK Studio has now been nominated for the 'best new salon' award in the UK Hair and Beauty Awards Speaking on the nomination, Megan said: "I'm really overwhelmed.
"I never dreamed of being in this position that I'm in now. Sometimes you just think that's not possible for you, and the fact that I was selected as a finalist, I just didn't expect it at all."
In the future, Megan hopes that she can expand her premises, help people to become more comfortable in their own skin and enhance their natural beauty.
