HSE worried over slow uptake of Covid-19 boosters in Ireland

The HSE has urged people to get their second Covid-19 booster dose as the vaccination programme dwindles nationwide.

The uptake of the second booster amongst all age groups stands at 31%, while only a quarter of healthcare workers have received their additional vaccine. The reluctance coincides with a surge in winter illnesses, as the HSE struggles with a spike in hospitalisations nationwide.

There is also limited evidence that Covid-19 booster doses may offer protection against other illnesses, including diseases such as tuberculosis. This was supported through research carried out by health professionals in Trinity College Dublin.

Eileen Whelan, national lead of the Covid-19 vaccine programme, spoke to RTE's Morning Ireland about the implications of low compliance. She said that a minimum uptake of 75% was needed across the population, with low numbers of young people coming forward for their booster dose.

She told RTE: "We know there are new variants. One new variant is highly transmissible and we have a couple of weeks now to prepare and get ahead of it. Everyone who is receiving the second booster is getting an adapted vaccine, which offers broader protection than the original vaccine."

She encouraged all people in the 18-45 cohort to come forward for their booster, although levels of interest have also waned across other age groups. She maintained that the level of uptake amongst healthcare workers was concerning, saying that a "lot of work" was needed to encourage people to come forward for boosters.

Healthcare professionals are also encouraging wider uptake of the flu vaccine. Walk in clinics for children are set to open nationwide as flu cases rise.
