Brits using HSBC UK online banking were left frustrated on Friday night with the service down leaving some people stranded and unable to pay for shopping or travel.
People first started complaining on social media at around 8.30pm that they were not able to use their HSBC cards and that transactions were being declined.
Some having headed out for the night found themselves unable to pay bills while others found themselves stuck as they attempted to travel.
HSBC said that personal and business mobile and banking services were all affected and that it was resolved after three-and-a-half hours.
The bank posted on Twitter at 1.37am that services were reinstated following an investigation into the outage.
It had confirmed the outage at 10.30pm on Friday night, with users replying with complaints about leaving items for collateral in restaurants and leaving supermarkets without groceries.
Some users replying on Twitter said they had been unable to use the service since 8pm.
“Banking services are back up and running following an earlier service disruption,” HSBC UK said.
“To those impacted, thanks very much for your patience and we’re really sorry for the inconvenience.”
The website Downdetector had thousands of reports of outages which peaked at over 5,000 around 9pm.
The website said that 65% of people reported problems with mobile banking, 30% with online banking and 5% with their mobile login.
