HSBC has announced that it will close over 100 bank branches across the UK from April 2023 as more customers make the move to online banking.
The bank confirmed that it has seen a major decline in the amount of customers using its physical banks since the pandemic, with some of the branches set to close serving fewer than 250 people a week. 114 branches will close next year between April and August, including one branch in Newcastle, one in North Tyneside and one in South Tyneside.
It follows more closures by HSBC in recent months, when the bank shut down its Bishop Auckland and Hartlepool branches in August and September respectively as two of the 69 branches closed by the bank across the UK this year. According to the HSBC website, next year's closures will leave just one physical branch remaining in Newcastle on Grey Street, and none in North or South Tyneside.

Here are the three HSBC branches that will be impacted in the North East:
- The Whitley Bay branch is set to close on 2 May
- The South Shields branch will close on 13 June
- The Gosforth branch is due to close on 18 July
Jackie Uhi, HSBC UK’s managing director of UK distribution, said: "People are changing the way they bank and footfall in many branches is at an all-time low, with no signs of it returning. Banking remotely is becoming the norm for the vast majority of us.
"The decision to close a branch is never easy or taken lightly, especially if we are the last branch in an area, so we’ve invested heavily in our 'post-closure' strategy, including providing free tablet devices to selected branch customers who do not already have a device to bank digitally, alongside one-to-one coaching to help them migrate to digital banking."
