HP Sauce gets new label to show scaffolding on Big Ben tower

HP Sauce will change its label to add scaffolding to Big Ben’s home Elizabeth Tower to celebrate the landmark’s 160th anniversary.

The popular sauce is changing its bottle for the first time in a century while maintenance work is carried out on the iconic tower.

It is believed that its name stands for Houses of Parliament, as it was rumoured the sauce was used in the restaurant there at the turn of the century.

Brown sauce was first formulated in 1870, with the HP Sauce brand name registered by inventor Frederick Gibson Garton in 1896.

It was made in Birmingham until 2007, when Heinz moved production to Holland.

Joel Hughes, spokesperson for HP Sauce, said: “Big Ben is the most Instagrammed landmark in the UK and decorates millions of bottles of HP Sauce every year.

“While Ben has a face-lift, and because we’re a good and honest sauce, we thought it was high time we showcased the true view and created a label that showcases parliament and Big Ben in their scaffolded glory.

“The 160th birthday of Big Ben at the end of May seemed like a great opportunity to launch, so we’re celebrating his momentous Big Ben-anniversary with our new label that we’ll keep until the old guy rings out across the land again in 2021.”
