Omen 27u 4K design and build
The build quality of the unit is excellent, and the design is sleek. It looks great in any room in the house. It has a height adjustable stand and takes only minutes to set up and secure.
The connectors in the diamond shape bump on the rear are laid out cleverly with functionality in mind, with the ports facing to the sides.
The stand is designed so you can hang your gaming headset on it too which is handy.
As you might expect from its name, the Omen 27u display size is 27in. It’s got 450 nits of peak brightness and viewing angles are superb.
Contrast is an impressive 1000:1 and HDR 10 is supported.
There are slim and flush bezels on all four sides, and when the screen is on, you can barely see the borders.
And to add to the gaming aesthetic, LED lighting glows softly on the rear’s diamond panel and illuminates the base with customisable colours and effects.
Omen 27u 4K gaming
Gaming performance is aided by Adaptive-Sync which covers both the FreeSync and G-Sync platforms.
Adaptive sync is the dynamic adjusting of a monitor's refresh rate to the frame rate of the graphics card (GPU), eliminating screen tearing and stuttering while playing PC games.
Blur reduction is also included.
Games such as Forza Horizon 5, which support native HDR, are super impressive on the 27u. Being able to enjoy console games at 120fps in 4K is incredible but being able to boost frame rates to 144fps means that PC gaming is arguably even better.
The display’s bright and vibrant colours in both cases are fantastic.
Connectivity
HP’s Omen 27u has connectivity options galore including a HDMI 2.1 port for console compatibility, a HDMI 2.0 port. DisplayPort 1.4, a headphone port, two USB A ports and a data-only USB-C port.
As mentioned above, the two HDMI inputs mean you can easily switch between console gaming and PC gaming, which will be a big plus for some users.
The Omen 27u will automatically sense when it is connected to a gaming console and will set the refresh rate to 120Hz.
The sound quality and volume level from the two internal speakers is acceptable but not very loud, so I did end up connecting external speakers with more volume and bottom end.
Other features
Controls for the unit are accessed using a small joystick on the rear beside the power button. You get options galore for gaming, image adjustment and the LED lighting.
But the default picture mode is so bright and sharp that there is little need for image adjustments.
The screen is great for watching movies on too and the 16:9 aspect ratio means it’s great for productivity tasks too as it’s wide enough to have two programs running side by side.
Moreover, Omen 27u is great value and comes with a three-year warranty.
Omen 27u 4K verdict
HP's Omen 27u 4K monitor is good enough to suffice if you don't have the room for a large TV but want the benefits of UHD for every gaming platform you have.
It's a hugely impressive monitor in terms of image quality and the fact that you can switch between PC and console gaming is brilliant.
Omen 27u 4K pricing
HP Omen 27u 4K gaming monitor costs €829.99.
