Howrah station's iconic Boro Ghori turns 97, opens floodgates of memories of train lovers

KOLKATA: The story of Boro Ghori goes beyond being just a clock - it is a witness to the human emotions and sentiments attached to it. For almost a century, it has remained the favorite meeting point of everyone, from the young to the old, rich and poor. It has been a witness to countless reunions, farewells, and promises of togetherness.

Legend has it that during World War II, when Howrah Station was bombed, Boro Ghori was the only thing that survived the blast. It continued to tick, keeping the time and serving as a beacon of hope amidst the chaos.

Interestingly, the clock inside the station building has a unique locational advantage. Despite the popularity of smartphones, the clock has remained a favourite meeting point for people of all ages, genders and social classes. The dial facing platforms 1 to 8 is 4 ft in size, while the other dial-facing platforms 9 to 15 is equally impressive. The hour hand of the clock is 18 inches long, and the minute hand is 24 inches long. The clock was manufactured by Gents Company in London and was installed at Howrah by the famous clock merchant of Kolkata, the Late Deb Prosad Roy of M/s Roy Brothers Co.

Over the years, the clock has had its fair share of challenges. The cable used to develop problems, and the clock had to be manually wound every day. However, with the advancement in technology, the pulsar device was placed inside the clock, and now it runs without any manual intervention.

Boro Ghori has become an integral part of the city's heritage, and its significance goes beyond being just a clock. It is a symbol of love, hope, and resilience. For generations, it has stood the test of time and has been a witness to the changing times. It has seen the city grow and evolve, and yet, it remains the same - a silent observer of the human emotions and the pulse of the city.

As Howrah Station's famous landmark completes 97 years of service, it continues to be the favorite meeting point of millions. While smartphones may have made it easier to find each other, Boro Ghori remains the ultimate meeting place. It continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Kolkatans, and its story is a testament to the city's rich heritage, said ER chief public relations officer Kausik Mitra.
