Howdon woman left partner with gaping wound to neck with glass during drunken row about music

A woman left her partner with a gaping wound to his neck with a broken glass during a drunken row about music.

Tracey Howe and her then-boyfriend starting arguing during a drinking session in January last year. Having consumed two or three bottles of cider, the man went to buy whisky, which Howe didn't want him to do and threatened to have him removed if he consumed it.

He started drinking it and she phoned the police but they left after doing checks as nothing untoward was happening. Emma Dowling, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court it was later on that trouble flared over what music they should have on YouTube.

Miss Dowling said: "They were still drinking and listening to music and they began arguing about what mustic should be put on. He said she picked up a broken piece of glass and stabbed him in the neck but she said she picked up a broken glass and flung it at him during the argument."

The man was said to have "disengaged" from the case and Howe was sentenced on her basis of plea, that she threw the glass.

The victim suffered a two inch wound to his neck, described as having "gaping edges" but there was no damage to any arteries. He needed surgery under general anaesthetic and ten stitches.

Howe initially claimed he had done it to himself but later said she'd thrown a broken glass at him. The 32-year-old, of Barrassford Street, East Howdon, North Tyneside, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and was sentenced to 16 months suspended for 18 months with an alcohol abstinence monitoring requirement and rehabilitation. She was also given a 12 month restraining order.

Matthew Purves, defending, said: "She is a lady of good character and is somewhat vulnerable. She had a difficult start to life.

"She contacted the police because she was worried about the consequences of the use of spirits. She ended up picking up a glass and throwing it in an impulsive act in the course of an argument.

"She's now living with her mother and sister and she has not touched a drop of alcohol in the 11 months or so since this offence."
