Howard University has taken the decision to sever its relationship with Sean 'Diddy' Combs following the emergence of a 2016 video showing him engaging in physical violence towards R&B singer Cassie. The university's Board of Trustees released a statement declaring that Combs' actions in the video are contrary to the core values of Howard University, leading to the revocation of the honorary degree bestowed upon him in 2014.
The board unanimously voted to accept the return of the honorary degree, stripping Combs of all associated honors and privileges. Consequently, his name will be removed from all documents listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University. Additionally, the board instructed university administrators to sever financial ties with Combs, which includes returning a $1 million contribution, discontinuing the scholarship program established in his name, and dissolving a 2023 pledge agreement with the Sean Combs Foundation.
Combs publicly acknowledged last month that he was responsible for the assault on Cassie in a hotel hallway in 2016, as evidenced by the video footage released by CNN. In a video statement shared on social media, Combs expressed deep remorse for his actions, labeling them as 'inexcusable' and emphasizing his disgust at his behavior both then and now.
The incident involving Cassie led to a lawsuit filed against Combs, which was subsequently settled. This legal action sparked a series of similar cases and public accusations against Combs, further tarnishing his reputation.
