His hits helped provide the backdrop to big nights out in the eighties and now local fans of Howard Jones can party along to them once again when the pop star heads north in the autumn.
Newcastle has been included on Jones' newly-announced UK tour which will see the creator of such hits as What Is Love?, New Song and Things Can Only Get Better perform at just 10 venues this autumn. The singer, songwriter and keyboardist will be taking to the road in October, stopping off at the 02 City Hall, in celebration of his remarkable 40-year career which took off in 1983 when he pioneered the use of electronics - combining synthesisers and electronic percussion - in his early solo performances.
Tickets will go on sale this Friday for the tour which will also mark the anniversary of the release of his debut single New Song from the Human’s Lib Album which was described as revolutionary and which he followed up in 1985 with second album Dream into Action. Jones soon became a household name with the global success of his songs which also included the likes of No One is to Blame, Pearl in the Shell and Like To Get To Know You Well.

During his tour, fans will be in for a flashback to more eighties hits as well as favourites from the nineties onwards when Jones continued to sell millions of albums worldwide. He is now reaching new audiences with millions of plays a month on streaming services.
He said: “I think my 80’s work still resonates through the generations because of the positive message in the lyrics. I’ve always believed that music can give the listener a boost, especially when things in life prove challenging.
"Things can only get better when we realise the power of our own actions and engagement.”
Jones' music has featured in movies and on TV in shows such as Breaking Bad, Stranger Things, Glow, Transformers and Eddie the Eagle. Career highlights have included Grammy performances with Stevie Wonder and Live Aid, where he performed Hide & Seek, while further album successes have included Revolution of the Heart in 2005; Transform and 2022’s Dialogue.
Jones, whose latest five-piece band fuses technology and more traditional instrumental skills from bass player Nick Beggs and guitarist Robin Boult, will be at the 02 City Hall in Newcastle on October 14. The tour is promising fans a "sonic and visual feast”.
