The Labour conference begins this weekend in Liverpool. And it comes off the back of Keir Starmer’s worst week yet as Prime Minister.
Just today, he insisted he is “completely in control” following an internal row over his chief of staff Sue Gray’s pay. Well, if you have to say it …
'Free gear Keir' has also failed spectacularly to shake questions around cronyism and his party’s relationship with its wealthy donors. His government’s incredibly unpopular (and damaging) decision to cut the winter fuel payment for millions of pensions also still looms large.
I expect the mood to remain celebratory – the drinks will be flowing. The same would go for any party that has just won a huge majority.
But there will also be a strong undercurrent of dissatisfaction – from party members and officials, both elected and unelected.
The National will be there to ask the awkward questions – whether it's the party's insistence on continuing Tory austerity, their cutting of the Winter Fuel Payment, their continued export of weapons to Israel, or their dismissive attitudes towards Scotland.
I will be there for all 4 days – from Sunday to Wednesday (September 22nd to 25th) – including a daily live stream.
All in all, it’s shaping up to be a major event – and The National will bring you every detail, drama and development.
