How we use Generative AI at the Standard

Generative AI is a powerful new technology with revolutionary potential. With the Standard’s mission to celebrate the most technologically advanced city in the UK, to ignore it would be foolish; to embrace it without setting clear boundaries, equally so.

The Standard has been quietly experimenting with generative AI for a number of months, without the results of those tests ever being presented to our readers. In many cases we’ve found that this powerful set of tools is not yet ready to responsibly augment the critical role of our journalists in creating the trusted journalism our audience deserves. But we also see tremendous potential to continue to help us adapt and improve our journalism, and personalize our products for readers. We want to continue to explore these tools with the goal of helping produce our award-winning journalism as effectively as possible.

As we continue to learn about these new tools and technologies, we publicly commit to some guiding principles. All uses of generative AI at the Standard will conform to the same high standards we set for our journalism across all platforms it lives on. No content that includes generative AI will ever be published without being signed off by a human editor or being clearly labelled.

As the Standard approaches its bicentenary year in 2027, we’re excited to continue to grow and embrace these new technologies responsibly, just as we have done in launching our new weekly paper, The London Standard, and embracing a 24/7 digital approach to Standard.co.uk, which is read online by more than 10m UK readers each month. As ever, our focus will be to serve our readers and tell the stories that matter to London, the greatest city on the planet.
