How Victor Wembanyama became ‘Hector Banana-Bread’, explained

Welcome to FTW Explains: A guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. You may have heard NBA fans talking about someone named Hector Banana-Bread and wondering what is going on. That’s OK because we’re here to help.

There’s a new NBA star everyone is talking about: Hector Banana-Bread.

Ok, he’s not new. But he definitely is a star and after this blog you’ll never forget his new nickname.

We’re talking about San Antonio Spurs icon Victor Wembanyama. But to explain how he became Hector Banana-Bread, we’ve got to take a trip over to Reddit, where a very confused user asked for help identifying their significant other’s favorite player to secretly buy his jersey.

On r/NBATalk Redditor u/Rafe_Cameron_OBX posted a simple question: “I’m looking to buy an NBA jersey for my boyfriend but I don’t remember who his favorite player is. Can you guys help me out?”

What followed was a set of “clues” that put NBA fans in the middle of a game of Guess Who?

My boyfriend is a huge NBA fan and I want to surprise him with an NBA jersey of his favorite player. I could just ask him but I want that to be the last option.

He did tell me who his favorite player was a long time ago in conversation but I have since forgotten. Here are some clues that could be helpful:

  1. My bf is 21.
  2. My bf is a fan of the lakers.
  3. We live in Dallas but my bf was born in Florida but was raised in Georgia. He sometimes attends Mav games.
  4. I’m absolutely certain this player is still in the NBA.
  5. This one is pretty dumb but I vaguely remember that the player’s name sounded like “Hector Banana-bread”. However, If I put that name into Google, I just get banana bread recipes so the name is probably way off.

Can anyone figure who this player is? It’s gonna take a miracle but I’m praying 🙏🙏🙏

The first four clues don’t do much to narrow down the suspect pool. A 20-something Lakers fan is one of the most common NBA demographics. But then you add in the fact he’s from Florida, raised in Georgia and lives in Dallas and your head starts spinning.

Could this be LeBron James? Kyrie Irving? Anthony Edwards? There are just too many possibilities. Until you get to the final clue: “the player’s name sounded like ‘Hector Banana-Bread’.

This, naturally, broke NBA fans. Among some of the guesses in the replies were Luka Doncic and Juancho Hernangomez (maybe this person really loved Adam Sandler’s Hustle?).

But pretty quickly everyone settled on Victor Wembanyama as the titular Banana-Bread and the mystery was confirmed solved by u/Rafe_Cameron_OBX in an update.

“The player is most likely Victor Wembanyama,” the user wrote. “Thanks to u/DJ-McLillard who prompted me to ask my bf if he liked the spurs to which he replied ‘yes, my favorite player is on that team’. There goes the surprise factor of my gift I guess.”

On the contrary, dear u/Rafe_Cameron_OBX. The true gift is the incredible nickname you just provided NBA fans with. And we will never forget your contributions to the discourse.

Quickly, Hector Banana-Bread spread across social media:
