How Tom Rogic sold Celtic to Aaron Mooy as new signing lifts lid on reassuring chat

Aaron Mooy revealed he managed to track down the elusive Tom Rogic before sealing his move to Celtic.

And he told his Socceroos pal he’s determined to follow in his footsteps by snapping up silverware with Celts. Mooy penned a two-year deal at Parkhead this week and immediately set his sights on securing major honours. The 31-year-old former St Mirren, Huddersfield and Brighton schemer watched Rogic hoover up 16 winners’ medals in nine glittering years in Glasgow – before going off the grid after departing earlier in the summer.

Mooy managed to reach out though and bag some advice on how to become a serial Celtic winner. He said: “We have been messaging each other. I didn’t know if he would reply! He’s obviously fine. I just asked if he had any tips, as a joke. He said ‘you don’t need any, they are good boys and it is an easy dressing room to be comfortable in’. He knows I will enjoy it.

“Tom obviously had a very successful period. He should be very proud of his time here. Winning silverware is a big thing. It’s an attraction for sure. They’re competing all the time for trophies and last year was a very successful year for the club.

“Hopefully this year more success will follow. I want to enjoy my football and obviously Celtic challenge for trophies as well. I haven’t won many trophies in my career so hopefully I can be part of a successful team. Celtic was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Mooy was an attacking midfielder when he was last in Scotland as a kid at St Mirren but revealed he can play anywhere across the pitch. He said: “I’ve played different positions throughout my career, I played in a double six a lot, also higher up. I’m here to play where the manager puts me – not sure where yet.”

Mooy is looking to kick-start his career after his time in China with Shanghai Port was cut short amid pandemic problems He said: “It was a tough time. One of the main things in China was that I couldn’t get my family over so I was there by myself for large periods without seeing them. That makes it difficult.

“But it was a good life experience and there were good players there. The level is pretty good. There were a lot of stars in my team – Brazilians like Hulk and Oscar, Marko Arnautovic, who was at West Ham. It was nice to play with these guys.

“Celtic is obviously a huge club with a massive history and, when I found out I had the opportunity to come, it didn’t take me long to say yes. There is no time to take your foot off the gas. The demands are high.”
