How to wear a men's scarf, according to Instagram

It’s just a long strip of fabric. Harmless enough, right?

Wrong.

Get a scarf right and it’s an uber-dapper accoutrement to any coat or jacket.

Get it wrong, and it’s easy to teeter into football hooligan or washed-up-boyband-member territory. Really flounder and you could end up looking like you’re off to Hogwarts.

But, never fear, for there’s a whole legion of stylish male influencers out there giving style pointers on how to nail your scarf game. Read on for the four rules to know this winter.

1. Totally tonal

Warm winters

If getting the right scarf pairing to go with your new coat is sending your frost bitten brain into a spin, then keep things simple and stick to tonal pairings. Whether the exact shade of your coat or just a slight variation on the theme, a similarly coloured combo always looks pro.

2. Check it

The check scarf is a classic that should exist in any man's (or woman's, for that matter) layering arsenal. Burberry's classic check is a particular winner when paired with matching camel or black.

3. Hang loose

Many a man has deliberated and debated the correct way to tie a scarf, and frankly its a fraught subject. If you want to ensure a sartorial win then - provided its not sub zero temperatures and you're not suffering from a Christmas cold - ditch the double knot and leave the loop in favour of letting it all hang loose.

Pair a dress scarf with a tweed overcoat for extra style points.

4. On a roll

If there's one thing male fashion influencers can agree on, it's their love of a roll neck. And while they might be a little intimidating to master, the long-vilified knit is most definitely back with a vengeance this winter.

Pair fine knits with suiting and chunkier roll necks with tweed overcoats. The bonus? No need for one of those pesky scarves.
