The Boat Race takes place this afternoon as fierce rivals Cambridge and Oxford once again prepare to do battle on the River Thames.
It’s one of the oldest annual events on the British sporting calendar as the country’s two most prestigious universities compete for rowing bragging rights on a 4.2-mile course in front of a huge crowd of over 200,000 people in London and wider international television audience that typically stretches into the millions.
The Light Blues of Cambridge did the double over Oxford 12 months ago, winning the men’s race for the second year in succession having also triumphed in the women’s race for the seventh year in a row.
Cambridge currently lead the overall men’s head to head 87 to 81 after five victories in six, with a 46-30 all-time lead in the women’s as Oxford desperately seek to bounce back in 2025.
An eligibility row has dominated the build-up to the latest edition of the event that dates all the way back to 1829, as well as renewed health concerns over the water quality after high levels of E. coli were also detected last year.
