This modern spin on classic noir sees film mogul Jonathan Siegel task sharp suited, cinephile gumshoe John Sugar (played with effortless cool by Colin Farell) with finding his missing granddaughter.

'Sugar': watching info, streaming, release date

Released: Friday, April 5
Global stream: Apple TV Plus
Episodes: 8

Billed as both a neo-noir and noir thriller, the distinction would be essential to the titular PI, as much movie nerd as he is investigator. Film is John Sugar's thing. He's a man with taste and artistic passion not just a hard man for hire. But when the charismatic private eye is hired to find Olivia, a film mogul’s missing granddaughter, we get all the tropes of the hard boiled detective story - inner turmoil, heavy drinking, sharp one liners and casual violence - front and centre.

But what makes John, and "Sugar", different from the cinematic PIs that came before is his, and the show's, self awareness. John is obsessed with film, acutely aware he's living out his life in the style of “Double Indemnity” and “The Big Heat”. As a sun-drenched California provides the backdrop, Farrell, channelling Bogart as a 21st century Sam Spade, walks, talks and looks the part.

Throughout the eight episode run, secrets are revealed and the façade of glamour and sophistication surrounding the film business begins to drop away to reveal the ugly truth, leaving the suave John Sugar emerging from it all as a new and genuine small screen hero.
