The city rivals met nine times on Europe’s biggest stage, six of which have come since 2014 when Los Blancos left it late to seal a dramatic victory in the final to claim ‘La Decima’ - a 10th Champions League triumph.

Real Madrid came out on top in the final two years later, this time on penalties and have the edge over Atletico when it comes to Champions League knockout ties.
The latest meeting comes in the round of 16 stage after the current holders of the competition overcame Manchester City in a playoff to set up an exciting derby against Diego Simeone’s side who finished fifth in the new league phase.
Tonight’s first-leg will be held at the Santiago Bernabeu, before the Metropolitano Stadium stages the return fixture next week. The winners will meet either PSV Eindhoven or Arsenal in the quarter-final.
Real Madrid will be without the suspended Jude Bellingham for the round of 16 first-leg but Federico Valverde is winning his battle to be fit after missing the 2-1 loss to Real Betis at the weekend.
Julian Alvarez, Jose Gimenez, Marcos Llorente and Conor Gallagher are pushing to start for Atletico, having been substitutes in Sunday’s win over Athletic Club.
As the last three La Liga meetings between the two rivals have ended in a draw, it wouldn’t be a surprise if tonight’s game follows suit to set a winner take all decider in the return leg.
