Why isn't Donald Trump's speech to Congress called a 'State of the Union' address?

This is why Donald Trump's speech to Congress isn't a 'State of the Union' adressThis is why Donald Trump's speech to Congress isn't called a 'State of the Union' address (Image: Aaron Chown/PA Wire) While Trump's Joint Address to Congress looks and sounds like a State of the Union speech, it is actually something different.

Joint Addresses to Congress have their roots in the Reagan administration, according to PBS.

As per the US Constitution, presidents are required to provide updates and recommend policies to Congress, but the form this address takes is not specified by the founding document.

These speeches are normally given during a president's first year in office but experts have said these addresses should be considered to have the same "heft" as later State of the Union speeches.

Coverage of Donald Trump's speech will take place at 1am on BBC News.
