Saturday’s matchup between the Carolina Panthers and Detroit Lions should be a cold one—in a few ways. Besides the weather, the outcome of this contest could strike a bitter end for either team here in 2022.
So, after that sprinkling of holiday spirit, let’s get you ready for Christmas Eve . . .

History
The Panthers currently hold a decided edge in the all-time series with a 7-3 record against the Lions. This’ll be their fourth matchup over the past six seasons.
Their last meeting resulted in a dominant victory for Carolina, one in which quarterback PJ Walker made his first NFL start. Walker threw for 258 yards and a touchdown—a 17-yard strike to wideout Curtis Samuel—in the 20-0 win.
What to watch for
Again, this’ll be a chilly afternoon. The current forecast would make this the second-coldest game the Panthers have ever hosted at Bank of America Stadium.
So, Carolina’s bruising style of offense behind their tough hog mollies and running backs D’Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard could be especially effective in low temperatures. Plus, quarterback Sam Darnold may even get some more chances to air the ball out, as he’ll be facing the third-worst passing defense in the NFL.
Conversely, the Panthers will have their hands full with a potent Lions offense. Jared Goff has pieced together a rather solid campaign and has an explosive set of weapons in running backs D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams as well as wideouts Amon-Ra St. Brown and 2022 12th overall pick Jameson Williams.
