History
Carolina is 4-2 all-time against Cleveland. The series started swimmingly enough for the Panthers, as they took each of the first three meetings—in 1999, 2002 and 2006.
The most recent battle, however, saw the Browns come out on top. A rookie Baker Mayfield paced his squad with 238 passing yards and a touchdown en route to a 26-20 win in 2018.
What to watch for
All eyes, obviously, will be on Baker. The 2018 No. 1 overall pick will seek out revenge (maybe) on the team that used that 2018 No. 1 overall pick on him.
Just one season removed from leading the franchise to its first playoff victory in nearly three decades, Mayfield was kicked to the curb for Deshaun Watson—whom the Browns invested a king’s ransom into despite his ongoing legal issues at the time. The Panthers, who were in search of an upgrade under center, gladly took the displaced quarterback in for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick.
Can Carolina’s new quarterback lead their new-look offense to a Week 1 victory over Cleveland and Watson Jacoby Brissett?
