NO Other Land, a film about Palestinians fighting to protect their homes from demolition by Israel’s military, won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature on Sunday.
The collaboration between Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers, produced between 2019 and 2023, follows activist Basel Adra as he risks arrest to document the destruction of his hometown, Masafer Yatta, which Israeli soldiers are tearing down to use as a military training zone, at the southern edge of the West Bank.
Adra’s pleas are ignored until he befriends a Jewish-Israeli journalist, Yuval Abraham, who helps him amplify his story.
During the acceptance speech, the Palestinian filmmaker condemned the “injustice” and “ethnic cleansing” taking place in Gaza during his Oscars acceptance speech.
Meanwhile, Abraham said: “We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together our voices are stronger.
“We see each other: The atrocious destruction of Gaza and its people, which must end, the Israeli hostages brutally taken in the crime of October 7, which must be freed."
