How to watch Nicola Sturgeon's press conference today as First Minister to resign

Nicola Sturgeon is set to resign as First Minister of Scotland.

The leader of the SNP, who has held the position since 2014, is expected to officially make the announcement during a live press conference today.

Nicola Sturgeon has been the First Minister for eight years after taking over from Alex Salmond in the aftermath of the independence referendum.

It's not yet known if she will resign immediately or wait until another SNP leader is elected.

What time is the announcement and how to watch

The press conference will take part from Edinburgh's Bute House at 11am today.

Most major news channels such as STV and BBC News will be showing the livestream for people to watch at home. It'll also be available via the Scottish Government live stream on its Twitter feed.

We will also be streaming the conference live on our Facebook page.

Nicola Sturgeon was the longest-running and first female First Minister since the creation of the Scottish Parliament, leading the SNP to multiple victories in local, Scottish and UK elections.

She'll stand down without realising her key political mission, which was Scottish independence.

The First Minister has faced recent controversies as her Government sought to push through gender reforms, only for them to be blocked by the UK Government.

And the past few weeks have seen her forced to deal with the housing of transgender prisoners in women’s facilities.

Her party will gather together next month to talk about the holding of treating the next UK election as a "de facto referendum".

More than 50% of the vote will be considered a mandate to start negotiations for Scotland to become an independent country.

Several political figures have voiced their surprise at the shock announcement, with SNP MP for Glasgow Alison Thewliss saying: "Absolutely gutted about this. Nicola has been an incredible leader."

And a parallel has been drawn with the bombshell resignation of New Zealand's prime minister, with another SNP MP Angus MacNeil saying: "This is as sudden as Jacinda Ardern… Geez."
