Newcastle vs Arsenal: What happened in the first leg?
Arsenal 0 – 2 Newcastle
- Goals: Isak 37', Gordon 51'
Newcastle took control of the Carabao Cup semi final tie with a spectacular 2-0 away win over Arsenal at the Emirates on January 7, 2025.
Goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon either side of the half-time break gave Newcastle a convincing win on the night and the driving seat for the second leg on Wednesday.
Isak lifted a cool finish beyond the Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the 37th minute in a move that originated with a long ball forward. After taking a one-goal lead into the break, there were only six minutes on the clock in the second half when Newcastle doubled their lead, Isak involved again as his shot rebounded into the path of Gordon, who was left with a simple finish.
Newcastle had a lot of defending to do, but saw out the game with a clean sheet to take a lead they'll have every confidence in defending on Wednesday night.
Newcastle vs Arsenal: Preview
When the two sides met in the first leg, Newcastle were in the middle of a red hot streak of form that saw them win nine games on the bounce, while Arsenal were stuttering slightly. Alexander Isak's goal seemed to underline the headaches Arsenal had up front, with no out-and-out striker, and injured Bukayo Saka, and a heavy weighting towards goals from corners.
One month on, things look a little different. Defeats to Bournemouth and, most recently, Fulham, have stunted Newcastle's steamrolling progress up the Premier League table. Arsenal, meanwhile, come into this having just put five goals past the reigning Premier League champions, Man City - all from open play.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insisted that win has given his side momentum and confidence ahead of the visit to St James' Park this evening.
"When you compare the emotional state of the team after the first leg and now after Man City, it is very different. The next stop is the final – we know how big that is," Arteta said. "The buzz the City game gave us and the manner [in which] we did it, it is momentum. It is time for full gas and to go for it."
Only once has a team overturned a two-goal deficit from the first leg of an EFL Cup semi final, so the history books do favour Newcastle. Only two have come back from a first-leg defeat at home, but Arsenal will take heart from the fact they were the last to do so, against arch-rivals Tottenham in 1987.
Arsenal have lost on their last two visits to St James' Park, but then again Newcastle have lost their last two matches at St James' Park, beaten 4-1 by Bournemouth and 2-1 by Fulham.
"Nerves and excitement are closely linked to each other as emotions and you have to try and focus on the positive side much more than the negative," said Newcastle manager Eddie Hower.
"I understand the brain can go in different directions but, ultimately, we're in a cup semi-final – what a great opportunity we've got. Forget any talk of a lead. What a great opportunity for us at home to attack the game, try and embrace everything in the face and do our best."
Arsenal's persistent quality, along with Newcastle's faltering form, makes the 2-0 aggregate scoreline feel a little shaky. Arsenal will smell blood. Newcastle will be roared on by a fervent home crowd under the lights. A thrilling, pulsating game of football awaits.
Newcastle vs Arsenal: Team News
Newcastle could be without key midfielder Joelinton, whose knee was put into a brace after last weekend's game against Fulham. Manager Eddie Howe has described the Brazilian as a "doubt". The same goes for Callum Wilson, who's training again after his latest injury - a hamstring issue. Harvey Barnes and Jamaal Lascelles remain unavailable with long-term injuries.
Howe is certain to select the strongest starting line-up available to him, with a shot at a first trophy for the club since 1955, so the goal-scorers from the first leg, Isak and Gordon will form the thrust of the attack.
As for Arsenal, there are no fresh injury concerns or availability issues. Long-term absentees include Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu, while back-up goalkeeper Neto is cup-tied.
Everything Mikel Arteta has said indicates he'll field a full-strength line-up against Newcastle, with Gabriel, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz all set to start.
