Manchester United vs Real Sociedad Match Preview

It has been a turbulent week for Manchester United, who have been thrust back to the top of the news agenda through a series of interviews with their owner, Jim Ratcliffe, and the unveiling of plans for a new stadium. Given the way Ratcliffe name-checked certain current players as overpaid and underperforming, and given the questions over spending £2bn on a new stadium while making widespread redundancies, the turning of the spotlight away from the pitch has hardly shed the club in a much more favourable light.

Ratcliffe has suggested this ship is going to take a long time to turn around yet, but in the here and now this match against Real Sociedad represents a potential virtual end point to United’s season. Out of the domestic cups and marooned in the bottom half of the Premier League table, the Europa League is just about all they have left to play for this season, other than pride and momentum. Winning the competition is more than likely their only ticket to playing European football again next season.

United have the edge in that they’re at home with the scores level, but the first leg in Spain showed once again how easily they can be knocked off balance.

United had control of the game and led through Joshua Zirkzee’s strike on 57 minutes. However, when Sociedad were awarded a penally for a Bruno Fernandes handball, they levelled the scores and turned the tables. Mikel Oyarzabal converted the penalty and from then on it was the Basque side applying the pressure and coming closest to scoring in the latter stages of the game.

When things start to click, United have the quality to progress, but Sociedad have shown they can be dangerous in patches, and will be out to pounce on any shortcomings in confidence or nerves from the home crowd.

It’s a hard one to call and it should be an engaging evening of knockout football at Old Trafford.

Manchester United vs Real Sociedad: Team news

Manchester United have a string of long-term injury concerns but the major question marks ahead of the Sociedad game surround Manuel Ugarte and Lena Yoro.

Ugarte missed the first leg and also Sunday’s draw against Arsenal with an undisclosed injury. He’s back in the conversation and manager Ruben Amorim has suggested he could return but an even bigger question mark would be whether he’s thrust back into the starting line-up.

Lena Yoro was substituted at half time against Arsenal with a foot injury and is not certain to feature.

Harry Maguire will also miss the game after being forced to miss the last two, but is expected to be back this weekend in the Premier League. Long-term absentees for United include Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount.

As for Real Sociedad, manager Imanol Alguacil has said his side are fatiguing ‘mentally’ rather than ‘physically’ with a congested fixture list. He has no big injury worries and in fact should receive a boost in welcoming back key midfielder Martín Zubimendi to the starting line-up. Zubimendi missed the first leg through injury, before coming on as a substitute for half an hour against Sevilla in La Liga at the weekend.
