Having been knocked out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, while languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table, only lifting the European trophy in May will prevent the campaign going down as the club’s worst in modern history.

Lyon will likely prove to be no pushovers, especially for a team like United who struggle in front of goal, but the Ligue 1 side’s leaky defence is a place for Ruben Amorim’s side to exploit.
The game developed an extra spice the day before kick-off as Andre Onana and Nemanja Matic, formerly of United, traded blows. After the goalkeeper had confidently claimed United were “way better” than Lyon, Matic hit back by claiming Onana was the “worst keeper in United’s history” in an eye-widening takedown.
Onana was unfazed though, insisting he meant no disrespect before pointing out that he has two trophies to his name with “the greatest club in the world”, while Matic left empty-handed after five seasons at Old Trafford. Tonight should be feisty then.
