Charles Leclerc will bid to win his first Monaco Grand Prix today - but, as the old saying goes, first he will have to finish.
Saturday’s qualifying session ended in chaotic fashion as Sergio Perez spun into the barrier at the entrance of the tunnel and Carlos Sainz could not slow his Ferrari down in time, clipping the stricken Red Bull.
Max Verstappen turned the corner next to see his chances of pole position slip away, leaving him in fourth place on the grid.
Leclerc was also on a hot lap but had earlier secured provisional pole and the inevitable red flag confirmed Ferrari’s front-row lockout, as the Monaco-born driver looks to complete his first Formula One race around his home circuit at the fourth attempt in glorious fashion.
