The 2022 Formula One season begins with its first competitive run today, in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
An overhaul of the rules and Max Verstappen’s controversial last-lap championship victory at the 2021 finale have made this one of the most eagerly-anticipated season openers in years.
Qualifying begins at 3pm GMT and once again is made up of three sessions. All 20 cars compete in Q1 over 18 minutes, with the bottom five eliminated. The next five then go after the 15-minute Q2 run, before the top-ten shootout in Q3 over just 10 minutes.
Unlike previous years, the set of tyres used by the top ten for their Q2 run will no longer be used for the start of their race.

How to watch the F1 Bahrain GP qualifying
TV channel: Qualifying will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and F1 channels, with coverage beginning on the latter at 2pm.
Live stream: Sky Sports subscribers can watch qualifying via the Sky Go app.
