How to watch England vs Iran - UK TV channel, live stream online, early team news

England kick off their 2022 World Cup campaign later today when they take on Iran at the Khalifa International Stadium.

The Three Lions will be hoping for a quick start to their campaign in Qatar, with today's fixture followed by meetings with the USA and Wales in Group B. This will be their first ever competitive meeting with Iran, who are managed by former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

Gareth Southgate will no doubt have a few selection issues to ponder in the buildup to this afternoon, most notably whether to start Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back over Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier. Lineup notwithstanding, his side are strong favourites to top Group B come next week and will be expected to take all three points against a dogged and resolute Iranian outfit.

Early team news

Reports this morning from Sky Sports suggest that Southgate could mix things up a bit from the back five that has been his default for so long. The England boss is expected to deploy a 4-3-3 formation this afternoon, allowing room for an extra central midfielder.

Evertonians can expect to see the ever-dependable Jordan Pickford starting between the posts, although the inclusion of Conor Coady in the back-line is unlikely - especially given reports that Harry Maguire is due to start.

The decision on whether to start Alexander-Arnold will have been a tough one for Southgate, and with a midfield three potentially being utilised, there may also be space to the experienced Jordan Henderson in this important opener.

Jude Bellingham is thought to be in-line for his first World Cup start after an outstanding half-season with Borussia Dortmund.

Harry Kane is all-but guaranteed to start and lead his nation out this afternoon, although the decision as to who joins him in attack remains to be seen.
