England vs Denmark celebrations at Box Park after Lauren James goal
England continued their Women’s World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Denmark in their crunch Group D clash in Sydney but suffered a worrying injury to Keira Walsh.
In positive news for the Lionesses, Lauren James’s sublime first-half finish ultimately proved enough to edge to victory. But a squad already decimated by injury – with Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Fran Kirby missing the tournament – endured another, possibly devastating, blow as midfielder Walsh got her boot stuck in the turf during the first half, twisted her knee while falling to the ground and was stretchered off.
The Lionesses still have work to do to reach the last-16 after China overcame a first-half red card to defeat Haiti 1-0. England will top Group D and reach the knockout stages as long as they avoid defeat to the Asian champions on Tuesday.
