New Competition Format

Currently, the FIFA Club World Cup is a tournament containing teams who win their respective continental competitions: the AFC Champions League, the CAF Champions League, the CONCACAF Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, the OFC Champions League and, of course, the UEFA Champions League.

In 2016, however, plans were put in place to expand the competition to a 32 team tournament that takes place in June.

A compromise was reached a year later to expand to 24 teams and have it played every 4 years.

2021 was originally planned to be the year the new format began, but was duly delayed as a result of the ongoing covid-19 pandemic.

The new format is now expected to start next year, with China hosting.
