Chelsea will look to continue their push for a quadruple season as they travel to Barcelona for the Women’s Champions League semi-final first leg.
Under manager Sonia Bompastor, who replaced legendary manager Emma Hayes last summer, the Blues have gone from strength to strength. They have already won the League Cup, qualified for the FA Cup final, and are just four matches away from completing the first-ever invincible WSL season.
The Champions League is something of a white whale for Chelsea. It is the only trophy Hayes failed to win in her twelve years at the club despite coming agonisingly close, reaching the final in 2018.
Barcelona have been the harbinger of much of their European misfortune. The Blaugrana won the 2018 final by a comfortable four-goal margin, also knocking Chelsea out in the semi-finals in each of the last two campaigns.
Things may be different this year. Despite missing talismanic striker Sam Kerr, Bompastor’s Blues won all of their group stage matches and came back to beat Manchester City from a two-goal deficit in the quarter-finals.
They will have to play the match without Lauren James, however, after she sustained a hamstring injury on international break.
