But fierce rivals Real Madrid’s shock home loss to Valencia meant that Barca still extended their lead in the LaLiga title race to seven points with only eight games left to play, just days after teeing up a Copa del Rey final Clasico by overcoming Atletico Madrid.
Now attentions turn back to the Champions League, where Barcelona finished second behind only Liverpool during the new league phase after losing just one of their eight games before overcoming Portuguese giants Benfica 4-1 on aggregate in the last 16.
Now they face a Dortmund team who were beaten by Real Madrid in last season’s final at Wembley and needed to see off Sporting Lisbon in a two-legged knockout play-off tie after finishing the league phase in 10th and later edging past Lille in the last 16.
It has been a season to forget domestically for BVB, who languish down in eighth place but have won back-to-back games under Niko Kovac against Mainz and Freiburg to keep alive their faint hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League through the Bundesliga.
This is the second meeting of the season between these two sides, with Barcelona having won 3-2 after a pulsating second half at Signal Iduna Park back in December that saw Ferran Torres come off the bench to net two decisive late goals.
