Marcos Llorente pulled one back, before Alexander Sorloth struck late in stoppage-time to make it 4-4 and leave the tie firmly in the balance heading into the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The two sides have met in La Liga since then in the final match before the international break in what was another dramatic clash.
Atletico again went 2-0 up, only for Barcelona to score four times in the final 20 minutes, including two in stoppage-time, to win 4-2.
They now sit three points clear at the top of La Liga and nine ahead of Atletico, who were held to a draw by Espanyol over the weekend.
The winner of this semi-final tie will face Real Madrid in the final, after Carlo Ancelotti’s side survived a major scare to progress 5-4 on aggregate after a thrilling second leg.
