How to watch Aftersun with Paul Mescal before Sunday’s Academy Awards

With the Oscars kicking off very soon, many people might want to brush up on their knowledge of some of the entries, including the Irish nomination Aftersun featuring Kildare actor Paul Mescal.

Mescal is headed to the famous LA awards show alongside a plethora of Irish stars hoping to snag awards at the ceremony on Sunday night. Despite missing out on a Bafta, the Kildare native is a strong contender for grabbing an award this week for his role in Aftersun.

The Maynooth actor grabbed a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Scottish dad Calum in the acclaimed film.

However, you may not have had a chance to see the indie film yet, or perhaps you want to give it one more watch before the stars head to the red carpet on Sunday.

Here is everything you need to know about Aftersun and how to watch the film before the show.

What is the film about?

Aftersun follows the story of Sophie who is played by Frankie Corio and she reminisces on the last holiday she had with her young father Callum, played by Mescal.

The film, which marks the Scottish director's debut, is based on director Charlotte Well’s own relationship with her father.

Paul’s performance in Aftersun has earned him a series of nominations at other award shows, such as Bafta and Ifta nods as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Lead Performance.

How to watch Aftersun?

Right now the film is available on the streaming platform Mubi. You can either sign up for €11.99, or you can avail of their seven-day free trial before you make the commitment.

However, if you don’t want to sign up for Mubi you can rent it from several platforms including Sky Box Office, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Youtube.

The big screen is always the best place to watch a film, and if this is your preference the film is still showing at some cinemas around the country - so it is best to check your local cinema to see if it is still showing.
