How to throw a Glastonbury-themed party

For some, it’s the biggest (long) weekend of the year, with thousands getting festival ready as they descend to Pilton for Glastonbury.

The annual Worthy Farm bash, which was meant to be bigger than ever before as the festival celebrated its 50th anniversary, was cancelled in March due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

But while we may no longer be seeing Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar headline on the Pyramid Stage, that’s not to say we can’t bring the Glastonbury spirit to our own home.

Dedicated fans to Glasto have aimed to recreate the festival in their own back gardens as best they could.

The Rees family in Worcestershire hit headlines when they really committed to the cause, even building a Pyramid Stage, bar, camping area and toilet tent in their garden.

Elsewhere, Sarah Emberson has organised GlastHOMEbury, an online socially distanced Glastonbury replacement that aims to bring festival fans together to raise money for good causes – with people encouraged to set up camp in their own homes.

If you fancy holding your very own socially-distanced Glastonbury, here’s how you can get involved safely…

1. Be aware of social distancing rules

While the current rules are set to change from 4th July, we are still currently in lockdown and therefore we need to abide by lockdown rules. This means that if you are hosting your very own Glastonbury at Home that you only do it with members from your own household or in your support bubble.

You can find the current up-to-date measures here.

2. Get your garden #GlastoReady

Grab a few beanbags, some fairy-lights and a portable speaker (but leave the portaloos firmly behind) to try and turn your garden into a (very) mini Worthy Farm,

3. Pitch a tent

You can still have the full camping experience (Getty Images)

It’s not the true festival experience if you’re not going to sleep al fresco. To make your tent super cosy, grab a few plump pillows and a duvet as you prepare to spend a night under the stars.

4. Get your gear on

Kate Moss is the reigning queen of festival chic, making distressed denim shorts, band tees and wellie boots the standard issue Glasto uniform.

If you’re particularly keen on giving it some welly this year, you can take part in the festival ‘Welly Waddle’, where you walk five miles in wellies, donate £5 to Glasthomebury charities, and nominate five others to do the same.

5. Make your own Glastonbury food

Yes, of course we all go to Glastonbury for the music, but the festival is also known for its spectacular array of street food.

The Glasthomebury Facebook page has posted a number of recipes from the famous vendors, including how to mimic Anna Mae’s mac and cheese fries and The Cheese Truck cheese toasties.

6. Watch your favourite acts

The BBC has put some of Glastonbury’s most iconic headline performances, including Adele, Beyonce and David Bowie, available to watch on iPlayer, so you can relive some of the very best of Glasto from the comfort of your own sofa.
