How to solve the sword door puzzle in Resident Evil 4 remake in the Castle

When players first enter the Treasury Room, they will be facing four stone murals depicting a knight at various stages of life. But first, head left to find a large gate which is also locked.

The lock on this gate depicts three animal symbols: a bird, a deer, and a snake. To unlock the gate, players need to sound three gongs that display the same symbols.

First, shoot the gongs on the right-hand side beyond the gate that depict the bird and snake symbols. Then interact with the chain in the corner of the room to the left of the gate to sound the gong depicting a deer.

After all three gongs have sounded, the gate will lower and players can retrieve the Bloodied Sword from the middle of the newly-opened area. Returning to the stone murals, players will notice they each contain a sword that can also be collected and added to their inventory: the Golden Sword, Iron Sword, and Rusted Sword.

This puzzle is solved by placing each sword into the murals in the correct order. The murals tell the story of a knight through four stages of his career: standing proudly, being knighted, fighting in battle, and after his death.

Players should place the swords into the murals in the order which corresponds to this story. They must be placed in the following order, from left to right:

  • Iron Sword.
  • Golden Sword.
  • Bloodied Sword.
  • Rusted Sword.

Once all four swords are placed into the murals in this order, the gate will open and Leon and Ashley can push forward deeper into the depths of the castle.
