Chinese New Year is just around the corner making it the perfect time to brush up on your Mandarin and Cantonese.
The festival marks the start of a new lunar year. Celebrations begin on Sunday, January 22 with firecracker displays and parades planned in Liverpool. The occasion finishes on the 15th day with a lantern festival.

How to say Happy Chinese New Year in Mandarin and Cantonese
Mandarin
Xīnnián hǎo (新年好)
This means New Year Goodness or Good New Year. Another way to say Happy Chinese New Year is Xīnnián kuàilè (新年快乐), meaning New Year happiness.
However, this is a formal greeting typically used for strangers.
Cantonese
Gong hei fat choy (恭喜发财)
This is an extremely versatile Chinese New Year greeting, it can be said just as you would say Happy New Year to people. Its direct translation is wishing you happiness and prosperity.
