One in two Brits are missing out on savings by shopping for furniture at better-known chains over independent retailers.
The report from Ideal Home Show, in partnership with NatWest, analysed the cost of similar bedroom furnishings across a range of big chain and independent retailers, revealing shoppers are paying on average 58% more to kit out their houses with products from larger, better-known brands. A bedroom furnished using independent stores came in at £740.79, a £600.70 saving compared to a room decked out with items from household name brands, at £1,341.49.
Despite these price differences, data reveals many Brits have wrongly assumed big chains have the price advantage as over half (59%) believe shopping with high street giants versus independent retailers is cheaper.
Other reasons cited for shopping with big brands includes them being easier to buy from (37%) and not knowing where to buy locally or independently (17%).
Fans of homeware giants do however have their fair share of gripes. A third (33%) find flatpack furniture from large brands frustrating, 29% say the quality feels cheap, 26% complain that everyone they know has the same furniture, and 18% worry that larger brands aren’t environmentally friendly.
Conversely, those who shop with independent suppliers enjoy the array of unique options on offer (34%), supporting small business (33%), and being more eco-friendly (18%).
Giles Perry, Event Director at Media 10, the organisers of The Ideal Home Show, in partnership with NatWest said: “With the cost of living at an all-time high, it’s understandable that shoppers are keen to save money wherever they can. Whilst it’s clear that accessibility and familiarity is a big pull for consumers to shop with bigger brands, our survey highlighted some real advantages to opting for smaller independent retailers instead.
“Although many may assume that well-known chains are better positioned to offer lower prices, it was clear from our research that these assumptions were not always well-founded. The reality is consumers can enjoy a whole host of benefits by shopping locally, from big savings on price to a more unique range of products, all while supporting small businesses.
“At this year’s Ideal Home Show, in partnership with NatWest, visitors will be able to see the price differences for themselves with over 600 retailers to shop from at the show, ranging from more recognisable big brands to smaller independent businesses. Celebrities and interiors experts will also be giving tips and tricks on how to get your home looking beautiful without having to spend a fortune.”
