Are you ready to take calls from your Twitter followers? Yes, Elon Musk’s X is branching out beyond the humble tweet to let you actually ring someone up.
Whether or not that’s something Twitter users actually want is a different matter. The platform isn’t exactly associated with healthy conversations.
Some long-time sufferers will probably balk at the thought of receiving calls from deranged reply guys, toxic stans, and trolls. If that sounds like you, then you’ll be happy to learn you can switch the feature off entirely.
If you’ve ever participated in a Twitter Space live audio chat, you’ll know that you can already talk to others on X. Calling someone up, on the other hand, is a more direct way to chat.
Of course, you could just ding your pals on WhatsApp, FaceTime, Snapchat, or even Zoom. But why should Twitter users miss out on the fun? Here’s how to make audio and video calls on X.
Who can make calls on Twitter?
Let’s get the biggest barrier out of the way first: only premium subscribers can make audio and video calls, but everyone can receive them. The perk is the latest incentive for those willing to pay £9.60 per month to get verified and boost the reach of their tweets.
At launch, Twitter calls are only available on iOS, so Android users will have to wait. For now, you can’t make group calls on Twitter, and you can only ring users who have sent you a direct message at least once before.

How to make audio and video calls on Twitter?
You can make Twitter calls from the same place you send direct messages (DM).
Tap the envelope icon at the bottom right of the app to open your DMs, tap on an existing chat or start a new conversation.
From here, tap tap on the phone icon and choose between an audio or video call.
The recipient will then see a call notification and, if they don’t pick up, they’ll be shown a missed call.
Depending on whether you’re making a voice or video call, you can turn on the speaker, mute or unmute your mic, and turn off your camera or switch between the front or back snapper.
How to stop people from calling you on Twitter
You can enable or disable Twitter calls via the settings inside your DMs. If you choose to switch the feature on, you can choose to receive calls from either people in your address book, people you follow, or only verified users.
By default, you’re able to receive calls from accounts you follow or have in your address book (if you’ve previously given Twitter access to your address book).
