WhatsApp groups are a great way of communicating with your friends – perfect for organising a night out or gossiping about the latest show everyone is watching. Sometimes though, you may find the time is right for you to leave a WhatsApp group.
Maybe you and your friends have had a fall out, or you are still included in a group chat that has been inactive for a long period of time. However, leaving a group could be a source of tension or confrontation, as upon leaving, the rest of the chat participants will be notified that you have left.
Thankfully, this no longer has to be the case, as WhatsApp released an update earlier this year which allows users to leave a group chat without notifying the other participants, allowing you to slink away undetected. Note, the group’s admin will still be notified, but the rest of the participants will not, and to take advantage of this new feature your WhatsApp should be updated to the latest version.

Here, we tell you how to leave a WhatsApp group on iPhone and Android in just a few simple steps.
Leave a WhatsApp group on iPhone or iPad
1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone or iPad – its logo resembles a white phone on a green background.
2. On the ‘Chats’ screen, locate the WhatsApp group you want to leave. If WhatsApp opens on a different menu, ‘Chats’ can be found along the bottom of the screen, represented by two speech bubbles.
3. Now, swipe left on the group you want to leave.
4. This will show two options: ‘More’ - represented by three dots - and ‘Archive’ - represented by an image of an archive box. Press More.
5. Next, a new menu will pop up near the bottom of the screen. Tap on the red ‘Exit Group’ option.
6. It will then prompt to confirm your decision by pressing ‘Exit Group’. This will remove you from the WhatsApp group and only members of the group will be able to add you back.
Leave a WhatsApp group on Android
1. Open WhatsApp on your Android device – its logo resembles a white phone on a green background.
2. On the 'CHATS’ screen, locate the WhatsApp group you want to leave. If WhatsApp opens on a different menu, ‘CHATS’ can be found near the top of the screen, between a camera symbol and the ‘STATUS’ tab.
3. Press and hold your finger on the group you want to leave. After a moment, a checkmark will appear next to the group. You can select multiple chats at this point by tapping them to leave several groups at once.
4. When all the groups you want to leave have a checkmark next to them, tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the screen. This will open a drop-down menu.
5. Tap ‘Exit group’ in the new drop-down menu. If you checked more than one group it will say ‘Exit groups’ instead.
6. Another menu will open with options to exit, cancel or mute the group. Tap ‘EXIT’ to leave. This will remove you from the WhatsApp group(s) that you selected and only members of the group will be able to add you back.
