How to keep spiders out of your home as autumn mating season approaches

It’s that dreaded time of year again for arachnophobes as spiders start are soon set to start appearing in our homes.

“The start of September sees the beginning of the spider mating season, so people will find more spiders in their home than usual,” a spokesperson for GardenBuildingsDirect told the Daily Record . “It is usually the male species that they see out and about looking for partners to mate with.”

This means that you are more likely to see spiders scuttling across the carpet in the months ahead - but luckily there are a few ways that you can discourage them from coming into your home. From herbs and flowers to common vegetables, spiders hate the smell of several things that are easy to come by at your local supermarket .

But the first thing to do is a tidy-up around the house - spiders are likely to hide in areas with plenty of cover, so getting rid of any clutter will discourage spiders from taking refuge in your home - as well as making the more persistent ones easier to spot and catch. Once you’ve had a bit of a clear-out, there are also a few household products that you can buy which double up as a handy spider-repellent.

Basil and mint are both herbs that spiders hate, so it’s well worth picking up a couple of basil or mint plants and placing them near entryways. Not only will they help turn spiders away, but houseflies, mosquitoes and ants are also not fond of these herbs.

Other natural repellents can get your house smelling lovely while helping to deter spiders - both cinnamon and lavender are scents that put spiders off. Picking up some cinnamon spice, a lavender plant or even essential oils or candles with these popular scents will help keep them away.

There’s even a common vegetable that you’re likely to already have in your kitchen cupboard which will act as a spider repellent. If you don’t mind the smell as much as your unwanted spider guests do, placing a few onions around will help to ward the arachnids off.

And there are flowers that spiders don’t like too - plant some chrysanthemums in your garden or stick some in a vase on the windowsill. The flowers will naturally repel spiders without causing them any harm.
