When ChronicleLive tried the trick, we found direct returns from Newcastle to Newark for £237.15, flying out on Thursday November 28 - Thanksgiving - and returning on Tuesday December 3.
To get the cheapest fares, we had to sign up to Jet2's Travel Club - which costs nothing - and use a discount code, 'WINTER15'.
With it being Thanksgiving, hotels may be expensive, but what better time to be in the States?
