How to get a fast-track passport if yours is expiring soon and how long it takes

If your passport is due to expire soon, there is a way to get one through a fast-track process.

We have explained the procedure for applying for a new travel document, how much it costs and how long it is likely to take. This comes as more than 1,000 Passport Office workers prepare to go on strike for five weeks from April 3 until May 5.

Holidaymakers are being warned of a "significant impact" on passport delivery as summer looms. So the following details may be useful for anyone who needs a new passport soon.

You usually need at least six months left before your passport expires from your date of travel in order to use it for a holiday.
