The cost of living and rise of inflation has seen the price of day-to-day rail tickets nearly double. Concessional railcards have always been available and now shoppers can get them at a discounted price.
Trainline is offering 33% off digital railcards if you use the code SUMMER33 at checkout, this will take the price from £30 a year to £20. Recent data from the Office for National Statistics shows July's Retail Prices Index inflation was 12.3%, which is the highest in nearly 40 years. This figure is used by the Government to set a cap on regulated train fares.
Railcards are a convenient way for travellers to save money on train fares, once you purchase a relevant railcard you are eligible to buy discounted concessional tickets depending on your age.
There are seven digital railcards options available including the 16-25 Railcard, 26-30, Senior Railcard, 16-17 Saver, a Two Together Railcard, a Family and Friends Railcard, and a Network railcard. The cards can be bought to last a year for £20 (reduced from £30) or for three years at £47 (this is reduced from £70).
All railcards offer an average of a third off the standard price, which is a lifeline considering the rate prices are currently rising. Looking at a direct return ticket from any Manchester station to London Euston would normally costs £68.60, with a 16-25 railcard this is discounted to £45.25.
Even if you only used your one-year railcard once, you would still save £3.35 after the initial £20 cost.
