How to evolve Inkay into Malamar in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s DLC probably seems confusing if you never played Pokemon X and Y, or maybe even more so if you did. Inkay’s original evolution method took advantage of some specific 3DS features in a very specific way. Even if you know the basics, it’s easy to mess up the process or start it too late.
Or it was until now. Our Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Inkay evolution guide explains just what you need to do and when.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: How to evolve Inkay
Inkay’s original evolution method required you to turn the 3DS upside down when they leveled up to level 30 or any time they leveled up after that, and it’s still the same now, with a few caveats.
The Switch has a gyro sensor, so it will recognize when you turn it upside down. That means your Switch can’t be docked, and you need to have only one pair of Joy-Con synched to the system. You also need to have those Joy-Con physically attached to the Switch.
Timing is another important factor. You need to turn your Switch upside down at the moment your Inkay levels up and keep it that way until Inkay finishes evolving. Keep an eye on your Inkay’s EXP meter in battle, and turn the Switch upside down before the meter fills up. If you’re using items to level up, turn the system upside down before using your Rare Candy or other EXP items.
The Switch’s gyro sensor is a bit less sensitive than the 3DS sensor, so you might need to try more than once.
Where to find Inkay in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
If you haven’t found Inkay yet and are just aiming to fill out your Pokedex, you’ll need the Indigo Disk DLC expansion. Inkay only shows up in the Blueberry Academy Terrarium.
You should have an easy time finding Inkay in the Coastal Biome. You could also just have a friend trade you Inkay or Malamar if you want to take the easy route.
