How to cancel a flight with Jet2, easyJet and TUI and if you will get a refund

People travelling abroad have seen some chaos across UK airports recently. Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Gatwick Airport have seen long delays, massive security queues and flight cancellations.

While everyone has likely been looking forward to returning to annual holidays, or quick city breaks, it might be too much of a hassle for some, so it's important to know how to cancel flights should you need to.

We've put together a list of each way you can cancel a flight with the major holiday operators, TUI, easyJet and Jet2. Using information from the websites, we have listed the process to cancel a flight and what that means in terms of refunds or rebookings.

Jet2

Through Jet2 you can cancel or amend flight bookings. Amending a booking means you can change the date of a trip and see increased flight costs. Amendments will be charged. To amend a flight call 0333 300 0042.

To cancel a booking through Jet2, you need to login into your Jet2 account and click on Manage My Booking. From there you can just click 'Cancel Flights'.

Once a cancellation request has been submitted you will be sent a cancellation email, follow the link in the email to confirm and complete the cancellation, all scheduled flights are non-refundable.

easyJet

The way that easyJet keeps their fares so low is because any tickets bought are non-refundable. However, like Jet2, easyJet allows people to amend their bookings.

This includes changing names and spelling mistakes, changing flight times, dates and destinations, changing or adding seats and adding hold luggage, sports equipment or increasing weight allowance. Title changes and spelling mistakes can be amended free of charge but they will charge for most other changes, unless they are included for free in your fare.

There are several reasons you might want to cancel a flight. easyJet has different policies depending on the reason.

If you cancel within 24 hours of making a booking you will receive a full refund, minus the cancellation fee. If you do not fly you are entitled to a refund of some government taxes. If you can no longer fly and it has been over 24 hours, easyJet cannot offer a refund, but you can change your flight to a future date and destination.

If you are cancelling due to a serious illness, easyJet ask that you contact the customer service team as soon as you can. In the unfortunate event that you are cancelling due to a bereavement, you can get help for this.

If you haven’t started your journey and need to make a flight change, this can be done online through Manage My Booking. Making the change will generate a change fee, which will be refunded on the receipt of the Death Certificate, in those circumstances.

If you have been affected by a bereavement, that has prevented you from travelling or has resulted in you missing your flight, easyJet will offer a flight voucher to cover everyone on the booking that is unable to travel.

If the booker or passenger is deceased, a full or partial refund can be offered back to the original payment method. For those who booked through a travel agent, contact them directly.

To receive the refund or voucher you must provide the following:

  • Confirm which customers on the booking are unable to fly
  • Confirm which flights you’ve missed or need to cancel
  • Confirm if the deceased is the booker, a passenger, or a non-passenger
  • Upload a copy of the death certificate (this can be done at the bottom of the online form)
  • Provide your contact number and email address

TUI

If you want to cancel your booking or part of it, you should contact TUI as soon as possible. Once your booking has been cancelled, you can expect to receive a cancellation invoice within 14 days.

How much it costs to cancel your holiday, or to remove passengers from the booking through TUI, varies depending on how much time there is before you're due to travel and which airline you're flying with.

TUI cancellation charges cover the cost of processing your cancellation and compensate TUI in case the company may not be able to resell your travel arrangements.

If you're travelling on a TUI flight as part of package, here are the cancellation charges:

  • 70 days or more before travel: Loss of full deposit
  • 69 - 63 days before travel: 30% of total booking price
  • 62 - 49 days before travel: 50% of total booking price
  • 48 - 29 days before travel: 70% of total booking price
  • 28 - 15 days before travel: 90% of total booking price
  • 14 - 0 days before travel: 100% of total booking price

If TUI cancelled your booking due to a hotel closing or a flight cancellation, you won't need to pay any fees.
